Popular Staten Island Eatery Shut For "Severe Mouse Infestation"
The Cargo Cafe, a longtime popular North Shore restaurant and fixture of Staten Island's hipster scene, was closed yesterday for what the city Health Department called a "severe mouse infestation."
Inspectors found 60 mouse droppings in a walk-in refrigerator in the storage room and one dead mouse in the bar area inside the restaurant at 120 Bay St., St. George, according to a spokeswoman for the city Department of Health.
She could not say when the restaurant would reopen. Owners must remove the violations, provide an affidavit of correction and schedule a reopening inspection.
"These things can't be fixed on the spot, so it had to be closed in order to be fixed," she said. "The ball is in their court now."
A worker who answered the phone at the restaurant said the owner was addressing the problem. David Rabin, a partner in the business, could not be reached for comment.
The restaurant received 47 violation points during yesterday's inspection; 28 points is enough to fail.
